by | Aug 12, 2024 | blog

We spend thousands of dollars renovating our bathrooms and kitchens, don’t we? Those ceramic or porcelain tiles look good on your bathroom walls when appropriately placed. Not only that, but those tiles protect your walls against water and moisture. But like everything else in our homes, bathroom walls and tile floors are also prone to cracks and damage. Even one single broken tile can tarnish your wall’s beautiful appearance altogether. So what should you do in such situations? Do you remove that damaged tile from the wall? What about removing the tiles from the floor? And if so, can you perform tile removal safely and correctly on your own? We will explain everything you need to know about removing tiles from the wall of your bathroom or kitchen!
This blog will give you six easy-to-follow steps for tile removal. And yes, you can also use these steps to remove tiles from the floor or wall. These steps will help you in easily removing the tiles from the floor. You simply have to follow these six steps, and you can easily replace a broken tile in your bathroom or kitchen floor or wall.

Step 1: Clear The Surrounding Area

The first thing you should do is clear all the obstacles in the way of you removing tile from the wall or floor. It sounds simple and easy to do, but many people don’t prepare the area before starting their tile removal work. You better not make that same mistake, especially if you have never done this work.
And by the way, make sure to lay a dust sheet beneath the wall before removing the tile from the wall. Doing this will ensure that debris and dust accumulate in one place rather than spread across the bathroom.

Step 2: Grout Removal

Now that all the preparations are correctly made, you can start the actual tile removal process. So what’s the first thing you should do? It’s easy: using a grout remover, you must remove the grout around the tiles.
Once done with grout removal, you can place masking tape right in the centre of the broken tile. This is an essential step before you drill the damaged tile and remove it altogether. Don’t forget to use a trimming knife to remove the surrounding grout from your tiles.

Step 3: Drill Into The Centre Of Your Tile

You have placed the masking tape properly and grabbed the drilling machine in your hands. Perfect! Now let’s drill slightly into the centre of the broken tile (through the masking paper) slowly and carefully. Remember, you should not drill too hard or too deep. Keep a slow speed while drilling the broken tile in the middle.
Once you see a hole in the broken tile, you can stop the machine.

Step 4: Chip Out The Broken Tile

Removing tiles from the wall with a hole in the centre of the broken tile becomes easy. You should now pick up a chisel and hammer (in case the tile is not bulging). Tap the chisel onto the hole drilled earlier and chip out the broken tile slowly and carefully.
Ensure you don’t damage the adjacent tiles while chipping out the tile. You should carefully use the chisel and hammer during tile removal.
Once the tile is entirely removed, you can scrape off the adhesive on the wall using a trimming knife.

Step 5: Install A New Tile

Now that you have removed the broken tile, it’s time to lay a new tile in that place. This is a standard job, even for people who love DIY projects. Make sure to buy a replacement tile that resembles your bathroom wall tiles. It makes no sense to lay a tile that doesn’t fit the gap or doesn’t blend in with the rest of the tiles!
So you should always pick the right replacement tile while removing and replacing tile from the wall and the floor in your bathroom. Next, you can apply a good-quality adhesive onto the back of your new tile and place it appropriately into the vacant space.

Step 6: Apply Grout & Secure The New Tile

Wait for a few hours before the adhesive sets in. It’s best to wait a few hours to ensure the tile sticks properly to the wall. Once this is done, you can apply fresh grout onto the sides of the new tile. It’s better if you use tile spacers while grouting the new tile.
Once the grouting is completed, you can use a grout spreader for the final touch. Ensure you clean the grout properly before cleaning the new tile with a damp cloth. Uneven grouting can make your wall look bad. So, make sure you follow these steps correctly during tile removal and you will not have any hassles. In fact, you will be proud of your handiwork!
